Ushered today at Aurora Theatre today, for a brand new show ("rolling world premiere") called Collapse. I didn't expect much, I admit, but it was a great little piece, achingly funny yet tender and sweet. Plus it's only 90 minutes long, so won't wear out its welcome. I love ushering, you feel like you're being helpful but then you get to see a play for free. Score. Only one down side.

Aurora Theatre is a few feet away from the Berkeley Half-Price Books, and I can't be that close to a used book store and not go in. Didn't get a book this time (though I nearly picked up "Project Pope") but I did buy a DVD set -- America by Rail it's called, and I loves me my train trips, so I couldn't pass up "$80 value if purchased separately!" when it was $5.95, could I now.

I'm only 15 minutes in to the DVD about the Cincinnati-to-DC line, and I've learned a lot. The dome of the West Virginia state capitol building was completed in 1932. Also, if you aim a camera out the window of an Amtrak train and then go to the lounge car to knock back a few vodka & tonics, you can put it on a DVD and sell it for 20 bucks. I got 6 hours of this on 4 DVDs! There's much less effort put into these than I was anticipating. For a while, I thought they'd hired a helicopter to fly alongside the train, but it was just a smudge on the train window.

But I am a train buff, so 6 hours of train buff's equivalent of video aquarium is okay by me. Still I shouldn't have bought it. I have too much junk already.
