I haven't gotten one of these for YEARS!

I am Barrister [FAKE NAME HERE], An attorney at law. A deceased client of mine By name Rizal Badger, that died by Airplane clash, that bear the same last name with you, who was heading to the capital of Indonesia (Jakarta) to attend a meeting with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, on Tue Sep 6,2005 2:25pm. Leaving behind a deposit valued at $24 million dollars, the link below is the details http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4214452.stm. With this i want to present you as the next of kin being that you share the same last name

This will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you from any breach of the law, you can also contact me on my private EMAIL:([FAKE NAME HERE]@hotmail.com).

Best Regards,
Barrister Jeff M. Brinko.

The lack of these things in my inbox is a testament to Google's spam filter, I should think (though when I check the spam box, it's all fake Rolexes and increase your something size, no pigeon drops). I love the Barrister's naivete, thinking I'd have a next of kin named Badger. Usually lawyers who use hotmail.com as their legal email are a bit more worldly and cynical than that.

I'm intrigued that this is Indonesian in origin, or at least appears to be. Almost as much as I am at Jeff Brinko and Rizal Badger's plight.

Dammit, I didn't redact his name in the valediction! Now he can sue me! Oh, well, too late to worry about that now! Off to frolic in the meadow with the bunnies in the sunshine... tra la la la la... [dances clumsily]

Why redact the name? I've found that most spammers of this sort are so clueless that they don't change message details - millions of people get messages from the same attorney, or the same widow, about the same deceased relative, the same account number or the same winning lottery ticket. Googling any specific info usually turns up tons of web pages talking about scam emails. The only things that seem to change are the email addresses - those are probably deleted by the providers as fast as they are created.

Actually, I just fell in love with the idea of redacting a fake name. Sort of like I want my will to give all my millions to people who don't exist, but with lots of convincing fake details, so the lawyers will waste their lives trying to follow the clues.

Some days I wish I weren't insane. Not today.

Last year I got a real paper version of the Nigerian scam. They had spent money for an international stamp from South Africa. It didn't impress me.

Do you collect stamps? If I got that, I'd write back and ask them to send me more details, but to cross a national border first, and I'd string them along until I filled up my album.

I always kind of liked the scams that had horrible grammar in them, which made them so easy to spot.

Don't you wish life was always that easy? :)
