Last Friday, attended I Capuleti e i Montecchi with
progbear. Review is spot-on, magnificent singing from the leads, but weak story, and a nonsensical production that confused and frightened the well-dressed audience (I personally was not well-dressed, but then I consider it mildly insulting that the Opera management insists I dress at all).
And I say that the Chronicle review was spot-on, but it didn't answer the question of why? Fortunately, one of the commentators found the solution.
Just figured this one out.... The production design was done by one of my cats.... They sit in the corner and make sounds facing away from me into a wall, they like things that hang from the ceiling, they would love a room with a giant mouse hole, and they walk as if there are invisible hazards everywhere.
Next up, Moby Dick for Koalas! Yeah, I wish.
