Most opera productions over here are pretty messed-up experimental stuff. For example, right now I'm watching the TV, and it's Gounod's "Faust," and the soldiers are in clown makeup marching around under a giant skeleton marionette. Why? Who knows? Everyone's happy, so don't make waves!
